| The most exciting way to see Islay, Jura and beyond……during your stay with us at " The Harbour Inn & Restaurant "
Sea and Shore…..from Craighouse on Jura to the Corryvreckan the 27 mile coastline boasts a number of birds and mammals. Watch out for otters, seals, golden eagles, herons, oyster catchers, swans, hen harriers, buzzards, artic skuas, artic terns and if you are very lucky the amazing sea eagles (and we did)…dolphins and minke whales.
Look out for …Barnhill. George Orwell, author of the classic novel “ 1984 “ described Jura as “ ungettable “ to. Indeed it may not be the easiest destination to reach, nor indeed is the Corryvrekan for those of you who have considered going by land will know but like George Orwell I am sure you will see instantly why the great author chose such a remote part of the Inner Hebrides to pen his much acclaimed novel.
The Corryvreckan whirlpool , named after Breakan a Viking captain and classified by the admiralty as unnavigable until the 19th century lies in the north west part of the Scarba Sound where , 300 yards of Camus nam Bairneach, a blunted pyramidal rock reaches to within 15 fathoms of the surface of an 8.5 knot tide race. The motion and the accompanying roar are at their maximum when a west going springs’ flood tide is opposed by a gale coming into the sound from the Atlantic. A great trip to experience…..
Other trips can be tailor made to suit your own special requirements which may include a tour of Islay’s magical coastline, visits to Colonsay, Iona , Staffa (Fingals Cave made famous by Mendelsson )and the north Antrim Coast including the infamous Giants Causeway which is only about one hour from Islay.
We would be pleased to supply picnic lunches and refreshments to enjoy as you absorb the wonderful coastline of Scotland’s west coast
