Whether your interests are with the island’s beautiful natural environment, the vast numbers of birds and wildlife or the world’s finest single malt whiskies, The Harbour Inn is the ideal base from which to explore this fantastic island.

There are many locations of historic interest, some dating back to the Iron Age and others relating to the turbulent times in Scottish history when the “ Lord of the Isles “ were engaged in contesting ownership of western Scotland.

Islay is a bird watchers paradise be it the barnacle geese or the elusive corncrake to name bur two with over 100 species being present on the island all year round.

Golf can be arranged on the island’s challenging 18 hole championship links course at Machrie.

As an alternative to “ doing it on your own “ we can also arrange customised day trips….you can bird and nature watch; see historical sites; visit a working croft and generally experience the beauty of Islay and the neighbouring island of Jura where red deer roam in their thousands…all at your pace. And of course there are eight working distilleries who welcome visitors with a complimentary dram or two….

“ Excellent knowledge of the island’s bird and wildlife, great all round package – do it if you have a chance “
James and Heather, Australia.

Working with “ Wild and Magic Islay”, an independent Islay based tour operator, we can offer guided, small group adventure tours for those who wish to discover the real Isle of Islay away from the traditional “ package group “ bus tour idea.

It is YOUR tour so tell us what you would like to include and we will do the rest…

However let us give you some ideas to whet the appetite…..

SPIRIT OF ISLAY TOUR … a safari tour of this beautiful and enchanting island visiting special and secret places. You will walk through  woods, up hills and along river banks possibly catching  a glimpse of red, roe and fallow deer; herons and otters – sit by a fire on the shore and watch the huge Atlantic breakers rolling in from afar – watch buzzards, hen harriers and golden eagles  soar on the wing – picnic in the ruins of an ancient chapel – visit sites of historical interest including ancient standing stones and Celtic crosses. All this and more giving you the opportunity of reconnecting with the magic and mystery of life.

GAELIC AND CULTURE SAFARI … an introduction to the Gaelic language and culture of the island including an opportunity to learn the Gaelic language through poems, songs and place names and offering you the opportunity of getting the “ flavour “ of the language.
You will have the opportunity of visiting various places of interest including Finlaggan, the historical seat of the “ Lord of the Isles “… which all carry stories from the past.

PEAT CUTTING, DRYING and STACKING WORKSHOP… visit the peat moss, learn a traditional skill and help cut Hughie’s peats for the winter…a unique experience.
